Hebrews 11:4

Abel’s sacrifice was by faith, Cain’s wasn’t   It also foreshadowed the entire sacrificial system of the Old Testament and thus the sacrifice of Christ. Abel understood that his greatest problem was that he was under divine judgment, and he needed a propitiatory sacrifice. His blood sacrifice pointed to his own sin and to his hope in God’s provision of a sacrificial Savior. This is why Abel’s sacrifice was “acceptable” to God: it was offered “by faith” in God’s promises (Gen 4:4). (Great summary by Dr. Al Mohler - Exalting Jesus in Hebrews)
